as far as i know, -dTextAlphaBits=4 -dGraphicsAlphaBits=4 make gs crash.
because if textalphabits is used, apple-patented font hinting is
needed.(although freetype library implemented alternative hinting, it
doesn't migrated to gs.) so gs calls THROW_PATENTED which uses
longjmp(yet i can't make sure why it crashed instead of showing error
message), there is bug report regarding to this issue(but not for this
sigsegv).

i think it would be okay if you remove textalphabits when invoking gs
Hi jojelino,
gs is unlikely crashing as the fltk.png is correctly produced.
From strace I know that octave crashes before gs complete its output.
Are you sure about the bug number ?
http://www.ghostscript.com/pipermail/gs-bugs/2009-November/010447.html
is referring to patent expiration
