In 4.0-5 it seems something is broken in /etc/profile.
Perhaps you need this:
- ([[ -e ${p} ]] && read -r PRINTER < ${p}) && PRINTER=${PRINTER%%,*}
+ ([[ -e ${p} ]] && read -r PRINTER < "${p}") && PRINTER=${PRINTER%%,*}
