I can only guess because I read just a few days ago this:

This is an interesting information.
It seem that I see indeed so called hidden environmental variables of DOS!
The are visible or not depending which way cygwin was started.
I solved my problem by reinstalling cygwin after all files, links and
registry entries were deleted manually.
