This report is the result of a problem I ran into when trying to
do a tape backup of a cygwin host, using the tape drive on an old
linux box (10.164.123.227):
~ $ echo hi | rsh 10.164.123.227 cat
hi
~ $ echo hi | rsh 10.164.123.227 dd of=/dev/null
0+1 records in
0+1 records out
~ $ (tar -cf - /etc|gzip; dd if=/dev/zero count=1)|wc -c
tar: Removing leading `/' from member names
1+0 records in
1+0 records out
512 bytes (512 B) copied, 0 s, Infinity B/s
2930977
~ $ (tar -cf - /etc|gzip; dd if=/dev/zero count=1)| rsh 10.164.123.227 dd
of=/dev/null

--snip/above just hangs forever.. below is process table from another shell
