Alan,

Do you have an /etc/passwd on your machine?  If not, run

        mkpasswd -l > /etc/passwd

Otherwise, is your user a local user or a domain one?  For a domain user,
you need to run

        mkpasswd -u username -d domain

where 'username' and 'domain' are your username and domain.
