Works for me.  Every day, in fact.  You're going to have to be a bit more
specific about the versions of software you have and the OS you're running
on...

Also, try 'ssh -v -X -l user host' (you can replace '-l user host' with
'user@host', BTW, with an added benefit that bash will complete the
hostname from /etc/hosts for you).  If this output is not verbose enough,
you can add extra 'v's to increase verbosity.
