The local mail files that you view with pine need to be on a filesystem mounted with "--binary". Otherwise when pine rewrites the headers, you get DOS line termination, which ends up eating characters out of the beginning of each message body (since pine seems to use a seek+rewrite strategy for the header updates). Evidently it notices after a while and aborts, but by that time your messages have been chewed on a bit. You can force the file back to Unix line termination, fix your mount point, and you should be all set.
