This seems to be a problem with either the cd in question or the XP command interpreter. Other stuff running from cmd.exe is just as slow. Windows explorer isn't. If it turns out that it isn't the CD, maybe I'll say something about it to Microsoft, as I do quite a bit of stuff from the command line and/or bash.
