It's not always the case. I was able to compile/run the test program on Solaris, with three different compilers, including gcc. It's not specific to cygwin or windows. It wouldn't link on Irix 6.5 either with gcc or the native compiler (hence not specific to gcc either.) I doubt it's specific to the C language but clearly you can't test it using Fortan since "end" is definitely a reserved word there. Please note that, given the information above, this is now off topic.
