Elliot Jay Stocks' idea of transitioning all layout metrics on
viewport resize [1] is definitely a fun trick, but in practice the
effect is neither conducive to better user experience nor
aesthetically pleasing. This trick is being used all over the place
now – even Gmail does it.

hmmm.... It might be fun to try to create some "stupid CSS3 tricks"
sites. Just how obnoxious could we get? We could provide Paceaux
with some great examples and play around with some things we would
never do on a production site.

I'm thinking of links that zoom in and do a full 360 degree rotation
on hover ...
... maybe a bouncing ball to follow along with the text on a site like
in some karaoke videos ...
... how about an animated cursor implemented in CSS3

I saw one site a few years ago (pre-HTML5) where the screen was black, with a line of text scrolling across the middle of the page. The line was their navigation menu.

It responded to mouse movements. Moving the pointer up enlarged the text. Moving the pointer down reduced the text. Moving left or right made the scrolling speed up or slow down. If you were moving the mouse the opposite direction of the scroll, it would slow down, then start scrolling the other direction and (of course) speed up if you kept moving the mouse. Diagonal moves (intentional or unintentional) combined the actions.

It was very sensitive. I'm pretty nimble with a mouse, but it took me five minutes before I was finally able to get a combination of moves and very careful control of the mouse before I could click on the specific text link I was trying to hit. I only stuck with it that long because it had become an action game for me: "I'm going to hit that link if it's the last thing I do!"

The site belonged to a web design company. It was very kewl. I'm sure it won an award.
