It ain't necessarily the calculation of "width" so much as it is the 
"and such" that has it more or less as you want in Mac FF/3+, but rather 
whacked in Safari, Camino, FF/2.0.0.16, IE/7, and IE/6. Markup 
validation is important, but no guarantee a layout will not be upside 
down and backward in one or another browser.

If you are up for it, try this 2 column tutorial [1], might give you a 
handle on managing "the calculation of width and such?" And it'll work 
cross-browser...
