That is very discouraging. I setout to design my own modest webpage not just
adapt an existing layout.
Can anyone explain in layman terms what limitations of IE6 I have crossed so
that I can take it into account when I rethink my design.
What you seem to say is that CSS is really limited in what it can achieve
cross browsers, so stick to simple well established layouts.

You might consider this layout by Georg Sortun as a base layout. It works
cross-browser.

Put the menu in the right column, and the image of the gentlepeople in the
left column. I really can't help with the menu-- it's impossible to hold the
fly-out in any browser.
A simple menu alternative that would save a lot of grief and frustration
might be to use a nested list instead-- no javascript need for IE/6.
