You know what? The simplest solution was to edit 1px of gray into the 
left edge of the white section (the part that frames my blog's content 
column) of my body background image.

The image still shifts, naturally (Thanks, Firefox 3.01!), but the extra 
px of gray on the inside left border isn't noticeable.

I appreciate the assistance provided by all in this forum.
