I left the background-image in the style definition for #wrapper, but
changed the way I added the text,
like so:
<div id="container-left">
<div id="link_on_left" style= "position:absolute; top:130px">
<a href="#">Link on left</a>
</div>
<div id ="link_on_left" style= "position:absolute; top:150px">
<a href="#">Dango link on left</a>
</div>
</div>
