Thanks for the help; Bruno's earlier solution of basically pruning
back unnecessary css/html seemed to work fine for me (thanks Bruno).
I was just wondering about the second solution you mention, with
setting of the background image of the <a> using inline css: couldn't
that be done in the stylesheet by applying a class to the <a>? (e.g.
"a.dog {background: url(dog.gif) 50% 50%...}" ) I thought even
mentioning inline styling was taboo nowadays!
N.B. I'm asking this from a point of total ignorance - I tried both
inline and stylesheet versions out and neither worked for me
