If you're resigned to hacks anyway, you can replace your star hacks with
comma hacks - which work for all versions of IE.

becomes
selector,{}
For reasons best known to the almighty, commas at the end of a list of
selectors don't work in 'standards-compliant' browsers - although it's
common practice to put an unnecessary semi-colon at the end of a list of
rules.
