Reading your first mail and comparing the two pages in IE6 on Win98Se,

I didn't remark a difference in the hovering background color in the
menu (or in the css). In both it is working, and I thought the problem
was solved in the meantime.
There is no :hover without an <a> on the page, so IE is doing it without
help (for :hover elements which aren't <a>'s).
