I guess... :-) ...the short answer is that those who wrote the existing
HTML/XHTML standards says so...

...and standards wouldn't mean much if we don't follow them - at least
when we can.
Misuse of standards by us also makes it less likely that we can trust
browsers to comply with those same standards, and we'll soon be back to
the old days with "anything goes" and "tag soup" again. I personally
think there's more than enough of that stuff around already, and I
prefer a more standardized and reliable base for web documents.
