And the dilemma is, that in your concept, scrollbox must have this width 
and height to bring overflow:hidden into play. Scrollbox has to clip the 
menu.

I don't see a solution. Normally, such z-index problems can be worked 
out by establishing a stacking context on hover only. So scrollbox would 
have to be a child of the menu, not it's parent. It's late here, and the 
vine is cheap.
