A couple of solutions...
Adding a permanent restriction...
#sidebar {overflow-x: hidden;}
...will keep the sidebar in place in IE by hiding the overshooting part
of any oversized content - caused by font-resizing or otherwise, instead
of expanding the container.
Be aware of negative side-effects by hiding "too much".

...in otherwise unbreakable text-lines, may be a good solution in
specific cases. '­' is the decimal version of the '­' entity.
There are of course other versions, and ways, to force line-breaks
*only* when needed.
