This is not the reference you are talking about, I suspect, but it may prove useful in addition; Doug Bowman talks about his techniques for making liquid layouts that maintain proportion, and I think it's in the right sort of ballpark for your situation: http://stopdesign.com/log/2004/09/03/liquid-bleach.html The actual design he's referring to is overly minimalist, in my opinion, but the design principles seem sound.
