Hi,
I was about to ask if anyone knew where one stands in terms of font
embedding / font downloading. However, after going through the archives
I came to the conclusion (please correct me if I'm wrong) that font
embedding is just not viable.
The spec-correct @font [1] is poorly supported or, in most cases,
inexistent. Another option is Microsoft's WEFT [2] which is only
supported by IE (Win and Mac AFAIK).
That said one should design with web-safe fonts [3] and adaptable
layouts in mind.
Chris Heilmann put it best [4]:
"If you want to embed your font (...) there is no surefire way to
download a font on the fly."
We are left with image-replacement techniques [5] such as sIFR [6,
7, 8, 9] . However, these add some other undesired problems [10].
