I'm not sure what the problem with phone verification is? Steam accounts often hold hundreds (or thousands) of dollars in games and inventory items. Now, they are also being used to validate the game server(s) that a player chooses to host. Sure the internet is typically based on anonymity but the reality is that there is a lot of fraudulent activity that goes on within Steam and I for one am not at all opposed to giving out my phone number in order to maintain additional security on my account, games, items, and now game servers. Damn near everyone owns a cell phone which I'm sure has a number attached to it, so what's the issue?
