I wonder if this is based somewhat on E2. The core round
function looks a little like E2 (it uses 8-bit S-boxes and a
sequence of XOR operations to mix them together), but the
sub-mixing function doesn't look like anything in E2, and
the F-function in E2 had another layer of S-boxes after the
mixing layer, which was necessary for a guarantee of the
number of active S-boxes any differential or linear attack
must deal with. (Matsui found a truncated differential
attack that went more rounds than anyone had expected, and
Morai (one of the designers) extended the attack further.
I wonder if the sub-mixing layers give some kind of
guarantee about either the total number of active S-boxes,
or (more likely) about inter-byte mixing that will
frustrate byte-oriented truncated differential attacks.
There are a couple of papers at FSE this year from NTT
people; maybe they'll describe the whole cipher there.
One minor nitpick on the press release:
a. Twofish should be (USA, The Netherlands).
b. I think RC6's team should include a couple other
countries to cover Lisa Yin and Matt Robshaw.
c. I think MARS has team members from a number of different
countries.
There aren't *any* AES finalists with US-only designers.
(I assume the press release is spinning that notion that 3/5
of the submissions are from the US only as a way to explain
why they're recommending this new cipher, which was designed
in Japan.)
