PRESS RELEASE: Monday 20th March 2000 >> >> WEBSITE DELIVERS 1000 PARLIAMENTARY FAXES IN A WEEK Just seven days after its launch, STAND.org.uk has delivered over 1000 fax messages to MPs from concerned netizens voicing their concern about the new Regulation of Investigatory Powers Bill. Veteran net-geek Danny O'Brien, one of the brains behind the service, said "This shows that, despite what the Government says, UK net users and businesses are very concerned about the dangers of this new Bill." STAND.org.uk's new MP WebFax site took a team of volunteers under a week to build, and costs virtually nothing to run. It lets UK net users identify their MP, and then send them a fax via the website - all for free. The new service has already raised awareness amongst hundreds of MPs about sweeping new powers to spy on Internet use contained in the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Bill, currently before Parliament. "Ireland, Germany, France and the US have recently rejected similar net monitoring legislation." said Stefan Magdalinski, CTO of web start-up UpMyStreet.com "This draconian Bill could mean the UK loses out in the race to attract global e-commerce to these shores." "This Government is proving as much a control-freak online as offline." O'Brien added. "We hope to stop them damaging confidence in the UK as a secure base for international e-commerce." STAND.org.uk's MP WebFax service is available now at www.STAND.org.uk >> >> ABOUT STAND.org.uk Created by around 20 volunteers from the UK new media industry, the STAND.org.uk e-campaign aims to focus MPs' attention on widespread public discontent over the Government's proposed legislation controlling electronic commerce.
