This is not the answer for your readlink question, but may help you nontheless. That behaviour of rsync has always confused me. To be 100% sure what rsync does, I've got into the way of appending a "/." to both the source and the target directory for rsync: $ rsync -avx libtool/. /to/some/where/. Have a nice day, Berny
