Projects are available working across disciplines. Research Associate needed in the Materials Conservation Program to develop oil spill response treatment for historic materials.
About: As we see more and diverse oils being moved by pipeline, rail, ship, and truck, the chances that different historic materials will be oiled increases, yet we know very little about what products and techniques are effective at removing a given oil from a given historic material. This research will inform the treatment of cultural heritage that has been exposed to oil. The Research Associate will conduct phase two of an ongoing study. The Research Associate will test surface washing agents on oiled historic building materials, analyze data, and maintain research equipment at NCPTT. Duties include preparing, treating, and artificially weathering samples, and evaluating results using various scientific instruments. The person may assist in the development of the experimental design and/or write up the results for publication. Six-Month Term. July 15, 2019 to January 15, 2020. Qualifications: Applicants should demonstrate skills and knowledge in preservation technology. This may include but not be limited to documentation, condition assessments, literature reviews, laboratory or field research, materials testing, hands-on preservation treatments, or other related skills. Undergraduates, graduate students, or recent graduates will be considered. Studies in disciplines such as architecture, anthropology, conservation, chemistry, engineering, geology, geography, preservation, etc. will be preferred.
