Dear List Members, As a vendor and regular purchaser of large quantities of rolls of LDPE (low density polyethylene) rolls for wrapping, we have seen an accelerating decline in quality in what we are able to receive from various extruders.
In talking with a new company we came across an interesting opportunity and question with regards to what is the *best* and most appropriate quality film for our customers. So much so that I wanted to lay it all out in detail and hope to get some replies In general terms, this materials' quality has always been gauged by its clarity. For years we have always sourced extruded film made from what is called barefoot resin. Barefoot means that it is free of antiblock and slip agents. Barefoot resin is the only resin used in cleanroom worthy poly, though the product we sell is not sterile. Recently we have located a new extruder which stocks and will extrude barefoot LDPE resin for us in our required size rolls and quantities, but they also have what they call an Ultra High Quality Resin which is indeed super clear. However the base resin (pellets) as it comes from the manufacturer has antiblock and slip agents added to it, despite its exceptional clarity for LDPE film. So the conundrum is that we can get rolls of sheeting with clarity like we've never seen before, but we know "under the hood" its actually an inferior product. In the past we have seen batches of film where the slip agents "dust" off the surface of the film and there there to make the product feel less soft and sticky, but the presence of this material is coming out from base the resin itself over time. The barefoot resin product certainly has very good clarity to other film that we've seen out there, but there is certainly a noticeable difference between this and the high clarity product. My gut tells me we have to go with quality, but the problem for me is that people's perception of quality is clarity. I would love to hear people's preference here and to more completely understand the needs and requirements from the film with regards to the safety of using it to wrap art.
