The Museum of Modern Art is currently accepting applications for an associate paintings conservator in The David Booth Conservation department to assist in treatments of collection works for the 2019 Museum re-opening. This is a fixed term position – starting immediately until December 31, 2019.
Reporting to the Paintings conservators and the Agnes Gund chief conservator, the incumbent will have the following additional responsibilities: Exam ine s, documents, and treats paintings from the collection in preparation for the 2019 Museum re-opening. Works with fellow conservators in The David Booth Conservation department to determine treatment approaches and priorities. Works collaboratively across departments at the Museum, including with other Conservation department sections (paper/photo, science, media, sculpture), curatorial, Exhibition Planning and Design, and Collection Management and Exhibition Registration. When required for the 2019 project conducts research centering on paintings conservation protocols, new tools, and technologies related to both artists’ practice, methods, and materials. Assists in supervising seasonal (3-month) interns and conservation fellows and trainees as directed. Qualified candidates will possess a Graduate degree in conservation or equivalent training, and a minimum of five years experience with painting conservation, preferably in a museum conservation department. Prior experience in a position of responsibility. Ability to work effectively, both independently and as part of a team. Excellent problem-solving, time management, and written and verbal communication skills. The Museum of Modern Art has an emphasis on the collecting and preservation of contemporary art, therefore demonstrated experience in the conservation of contemporary works is required. Knowledge and experience of current methods of documentation procedures, including digital photography, and other relevant imaging techniques. Strong interpersonal and written communication skills. Familiarity with the Museum’s collection management system, The Museum System, is desirable. Adheres to the AIC Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice. If hired, the individual must successfully complete a security threat assessment through the Department of Homeland Security.
