Job Type: Contract Contract Type: Fixed term Salary: tbc Closing Date: December 8th 2017 The Royal Air Force Museum Collections Care Department is seeking a freelance objects conservator on a 4 month contract, from January 2018 to the April 2018. This is to preserve, stabilise and improve access to the Royal Air Force collections in Hendon, London, by carrying out preventive and remedial conservation on a variety of small objects scheduled for installation into three new permanent exhibitions. They are formed from a variety of materials including wood, plastic, metal and models of composite materials. Some have moving parts and will require fabrication of small parts. The conservator will undertake the following:- a) Provide condition reports, treatment proposals and treatment reports for the conservation work b) Liaise with the Collections Care Officer and Exhibition Project Manager to facilitate the appropriate use of time and resources to treat the required objects. c) Carry out remedial conservation on a variety of small objects. d) Provide conservation schedules and weekly progress reports to the Collections Care Officer. e) Advise on collections care and mounting specifications for small objects in the exhibitions. f) Deliver occasional object specific collections care training to Collections Care staff and volunteers. g) Confidently work in a team to handle, move, transport, and install exhibits for display. h) Support the Museum Registrar in the implementation, operation and maintenance of Collections Management processes, including location control, movement, transportation and associated documentation tasks, ensuring conformity with SPECTRUM standards. The contract is for 35 hours a week, working on site at the RAF Museum Hendon.
