Associate Conservator / Conservator of Works of Art on Paper

Definition
Reporting to the Senior Conservator of Works of Art on Paper, the Conservator
strives to preserve works of art on paper in the Museum's collections to the
highest professional standards. The Conservator handles all aspects of
preservation and conservation of works of art on paper, including methods and
materials for treatment, safe storage, exhibition, and those aspects of
framing, packing and shipping that affect the condition of works of art on
paper and their long-term preservation.
Responsibilities
* Examination and treatment of works of art on paper in the Museum
collection, including prints, photographs, drawings, paintings on paper or
board, oversize objects, and Asian scrolls and screens.
* Researches methods and materials as they relate to treatment,
manufacture or the history of a work of art, working with conservation
scientists as necessary to perform instrumental analyses.
* Prepares written condition reports, treatment proposals and treatment
records.
* Works with curatorial and registration staff to prepare condition
reports for individual loans and special exhibitions.
* Performs technical examinations to determine condition and treatment
needs and performs technically challenging treatments in consultation with
supervising conservator(s)
* Examination of works of art on paper for loan and in-house exhibition
as well as examines and prepares written reports on works of art on paper
proposed for loan by curators.
* Advises on selection of materials and furniture for storage and
display, on packing and travel restrictions, on proper procedures for handling,
and on appropriate environment.
* Works with the matter/framer to design special housing for
exceptional display or storage problems.
* Takes densitometer readings of selected photographs.
* Monitors light levels and relative humidity for the PMA, Perelman,
and any off-site facilities and assists in the review of facilities reports of
borrowing institutions for climate control and light levels.
* Serves as courier for transportation of fragile artworks, U.S. and
abroad.
* Helps supervise, train and works with interns, technicians, and more
junior conservators.
* Conducts presentations on proper handling and housing for museum
personnel or related groups.
* Participates in professional forums, conferences and educational
opportunities.
* Identifies media at curatorial request and for monthly
authentications day.
* Reviews pest monitoring data.
* Assistance in administrative activities and in coordination of other
paper conservation laboratory activities.
* Helps order and maintain equipment and supplies.
* Helps coordinate and assists in treatment by contractual conservators.
* Contributes to the annual report for the section.
* Carries out conservation surveys as they are needed.
* Responds to public queries.
Requirements
* Academic credentials from a recognized conservation training program and
a minimum of two years specialized experience beyond the degree in the study,
care, and treatment of works on paper
* Significant museum experience in the typical range of conservation
activities involved in optimal preservation and presentation of a large and
varied paintings collection
* Involvement in the support of active loan and exhibition programs
* Experience working cooperatively with staff at large to meet departmental
and institutional goals

Museum campus, with or without accommodation.
* Must successfully complete post-offer pre-employment background
check, including review of any criminal records.
Physical Requirements
* Minor lifting and bending (lifting of up to 10 pounds).
* Fine motor skills/manual dexterity.
* Ability to sit for up to seven hours.
* Able to regularly set up, adjust, and operate a computer/keyboard and
other office equipment used to generate work/transmit data.
Other Requirements
* Successful completion of post-offer pre-employment background check
consisting of a criminal history.
