Conservation Technician (housings) (part-time, term) The Kislak Center for Special Collections, Rare Books and Manuscripts at the University of Pennsylvania Libraries (Philadelphia, PA) http://www.library.upenn.edu/kislak/ is offering a new part-time, term position as Conservation Technician (housings). The successful candidate will report to the Margy E. Meyerson Head of Conservation and work in the Steven Miller Conservation Laboratory, a newly designed and equipped special collections conservation facility.
Hours per week: 20 Schedule: Between 9am-5pm, M-F Start Date: approx. August 15, 2017 End Date: June 30, 2018 Department: Conservation Responsibilities: - Designs, measures, fabricates, and constructs simple to complex customized housing for special collections materials. These can include boxes, wrappers, encapsulations, and other protective enclosures. - Performs simple conservation treatment under supervision of Head of Conservation to stabilize special collections materials for digitization, for processing, and for researcher use. - Maintains accurate statistics for all completed work. - Demonstrates advanced skill, craftsmanship, concentration, and efficiency in the performance of their responsibilities. - Assists in the general maintenance and organization of the conservation laboratory. - Collaborates with and assists other conservation staff. - Performs other duties as necessary. - Utilizes good communication skills to convey changes in scope of work that may affect project deadlines. - Demonstrates patience to work under pressure to maintain time-sensitive schedule and meet deadlines, as well as considerable skill, craftsmanship, concentration, and efficiency in the performance of their responsibilities. Requirements: - Associate's or College degree. - Formal or on-the-job training in book/paper conservation preferred, specifically in making custom housings and cutting mats. - High degree of manual dexterity and observational skills to assess the physical condition of special collections materials. - Highly specialized technical experience and evaluative skills to judiciously evaluate vulnerable materials and propose appropriate solutions. - Ability to work collegially across a large, complex, and dynamic organizational setting. - Digital photography experience beneficial. - Computer literacy with Microsoft Office (Word and Excel) and Adobe (Acrobat, Photoshop, and Bridge). - Good telephone, interpersonal and customer service skills; able to interact with people at all levels.
