Electric erasers in book/paper conservation I recently looked into electric erasers to use for the mechanical removal of pressure sensitive tape residues in paper/book conservation. Some years ago I used an electric eraser by the company Ecobra, with the white (vinyl?) refills that they were selling. This machine/eraser refills don't seem to be produced anymore, or at least not in the UK. During my online research into alternative options, I came across a few other brands of which Derwent, Jakar, Kottle, Sakura and Staedtler seem to be the most present on the market. They all offer white "plastic" or "vinyl" eraser refills. The prices for the machines and the refills vary greatly. The Sakura and the Staedtler eraser & refills (the more expensive brands) are also offered by conservation equipment companies. Staedtler only seems to sell their eraser and refill on the US market. I was wondering whether a) anyone has tested different brands of electric erasers and found a difference in performance/durability that would justify the price differences, and b) whether anyone has researched into the actual composition of the eraser refills of those brands and their suitability for use in conservation or knows of any current (possibly not yet published) research projects on the topic. Any experience with the brands mentioned above, or hints to some published/unpublished research or contacts would be greatly appreciated.
