This workshop is not the usual "here's how to work an event or write an elevator pitch" session, nor is it meant solely for emerging conservators. Networking is something you do every day, whether you be new to the field or a seasoned pro. It's an integral tool in your arsenal of professional practices and impacts your daily interactions with colleagues, clients, audiences, and even donors. This workshop will show you how to be a more effective networker, by showing you how to make connections, not just collect cards. It'll help you set goals for professional growth, and along the way teach you a few tricks to interact with people more successfully. And, if we have time, we'll also talk about working those events and writing those elevator pitches. Introduction to Podcasting for Conservation Monday, May 29, 9:00am-12:00pm Love listening to podcasts? Ever consider creating your own? Gain exposure to the entire process from broadcast permissions and writing questions, to recording, editing, and posting. No prior experience with recording or podcasting is needed and all equipment will be provided. The workshop with a lecture covering topics such as legal agreements with interviewees, question and interview types, podcast formats, software, and equipment. You will then gain practical experience as you interview and edit in teams with your peers, and learn about successful low-cost options for production. All software used in the workshop is freeware and participants are encouraged to bring their own laptops and headphones. Reading Between the Lines: Understanding Constructions and Exhibit Design Drawings Monday, May 29, 8:00am - Tuesday, May 30, 5:00pm Preservation professionals, be they conservators, collection managers, registrars, or others, have an initial opportunity to shape the preservation of collections by contributing to planning of construction and renovation projects. Being able to understand architectural drawings and the preservation outcomes that the built environment will achieve is central to making good decisions for collection preservation. This two-day workshop will bring together architects and engineers experienced in working with conservators to teach skills involved with understanding architectural, mechanical, electrical, and exhibition design drawings. Without formalized training in reading drawings, conservators and allied collection professionals may be missing crucial details that will affect their work and preservation of their collections.
