I would like to say yes to your query coalwater. But since you are little reluctant so you might try avg for some time with your avast disabled so that you can revert back if your opinion doesn't change which I think would. Though I would like to add one more name that I tried , microsoft security essential ,though not released but it is quite good i.e low memory and less false positive.
