Sounds like your problem was with the router and/or modem connection
(which happens occasionally and doesn't necessarily mean either device
is faulty or broken).

When you have a paid service like iTunes or the iPod/iPhone, you also
have the option of getting Apple technical support assist you...which
I believe as long as your device is still on warranty, is free.

Apple also has official online forums as well I believe, not that we
mind helping you, just an FYI.
