Ceresia's right, but if you do need to purchase a new OS, Don't limit
yourself to Windows, many newer Linux flavours are really user-
friendly and the GUIs are pretty similar to Windows/Mac anyways.

Check around, there's a lot more available then just Windows XP and
Windows Vista (Vista, I don't recommend anyways, not cause it's THAT
bad, it's just not worth much more then XP, so if Price is a concern
[including hardware upgrade costs to run Vista if necessary], Vista
may not be for you.)
