Interesting! Can those involved with other strong programs verify this?

My board code is descended from my Java re-implementation of libEGO. I tried writing one using real liberties earlier, and it was considerably slower in random playouts. Perhaps it's worth the speed hit as playouts get heavier.

Incidentally, preliminary experiments indicate that the capture-the- largest-chain heuristic (after escaping and matching patterns) does improve strength, despite the speed cost. I'll run a larger experiment tonight...
