It is invalid. It's just a heuristic that is working within the current domain.

The point is that if your opponent wanders into a space you did not consider,
you still have to know how to respond.  What clever humans recognize as the
"same" trap is actually just one of zillions of similar positions that will
be flooding your database of "known" positions.
