On February 14th, I'm leading a symposium at the AAAS (American Association for the Advancement of Science) annual meeting in Chicago, called "Games People Play: Challenges of Applying Mathematics and Computers to Games". In that symposium I'm speaking on "Games Computers Can't Play", with some discussion of the state of computer Go (among other topics). The other speakers in the symposium are Elwyn Berlekamp and Navin Bhat.

The AAAS, feeling there could be some popular interest in these topics, has asked us to give a ~45-min press conference before the symposium. I was asked if there was "anything I could show" to make the subject more tangible. So my thought was, would it be possible to schedule another high-profile matchup, along the lines of MoGo vs. Kim at the Go Congress? We could start with the game in progress, and have it wrap up sometime during the press conference. It seems like potentially a great opportunity to promote awareness and excitement about computer Go.

Please contact me if you think you might be able to arrange such an exhibition game -- ideally involving a high-dan pro and lots of computer power.

Let me also provide a disclaimer that I don't actually work in computer Go (yet!); as the meeting approaches I could use some help making sure what I plan to say is an accurate assessment of what's going on in the field.

For more information on the symposium, see the symposium information page. There's no way to link directly to the page; to get there, go to http://www.abstractsonline.com/viewer/?mkey=%7B8AA65090%2D37AD%2D4C29%2D9CF1%2D9BCD6EFA2210%7D , and enter "Hearn" into the search box.

Thank you,
Bob Hearn
