Don, Have you tried LLVM with D? I don't know how hard it would be to graft the two together, but I have seen posts from folks doing so with Erlang and other languages.
http://www.cocoageek.com/2008/08/llvm-gcc-benchmarks/ is an interesting benchmark of LLVM vs GCC - for some applications, it gives 20-30% improvement.
