I think Don Dailey makes a good point about creating a line of search which can quickly prove or refute a line of play.
I've been using life-and-death problems to improve my own level of play, and sometimes "vital move" patterns quickly lead to proper solutions - but sometimes they fail, and one must look for unlikely patterns which seldom or never show up in game records. When I play Mogo and other MC programs, I find it highly profitable to set up conditions for a "life and death" problem which the programs can't resolve - yet! I'm sure future generations will be more clever. 13x13 and 19x19 boards give a lot more scope for such shenanigans; on a 9x9 board, it's harder to isolate groups, and fewer playouts will pretty much exhaust the important possibilities.
