There is the classic Chinese rule of thumb on how far one can comfortably
extend along an edge: 2 spaces from one stone, 3 from a perpendicular pair
of stones, etc--But then a high-rank professional published an English
book some years back where one chapter dealt with what the optimal
extension from one stone would be in practice. It turned out highly
situation-dependent, from one to five spaces, with the 2 space rule
applying only in isolation from other considerations.

And probably this too is board size dependent: "How much is there
potentially to gain by abandoning the connection and running with one side
of the position?"
