Having various opponents is the best way for improvement.

The game http://files.gokgs.com/games/2006/12/20/botnoid-SimpleBot.sgf
shows very different style of programs, and our beloved GNU Go is no more
clever than these ones (even if it is stronger). It has its own style,
with awfull weaknesses, and the more i know/understand how it works, the more
i am surprised that it is ranked 6k on kgs. By playing only GNU Go you ll
probably learn how to punish its weakness, but not make your program better.

I believe Sluggo is an extreme example of this, it is by design especially
strong against GNU http://files.gokgs.com/games/2006/12/20/GNU-slugGo.sgf
but it is not clear that it is stronger against other opponents:
Mogobot19 nicely beated SlugGo who made very bad mistakes that GNU would have
never done (lower right and top left in the beginning of the game)
 http://files.gokgs.com/games/2006/12/21/MoGoBot19-slugGo.sgf

But GNU seems significantly stronger than Mogo19 (rated 2k higher on kgs)

CGOS has the additional advantage that if you lose against a much weaker
opponent, you probably have stepped on a bug

Kgs tournaments are a great moment of fun and pain :-)

Ok, crazystone 9X9 is available for download at Remi's page, but i see no
license, so i suppose using it for testing is ok.
Some other programs are freely available for 9X9 (not sure they have gtp)
