For those still experiencing this problem, I've found the wmctrl command extremely useful in coping with window freezes. In my case, I often return to a workspace to find a window that I left rolled up now unresponsive. But "wmctrl -r gimp -b toggle,shaded" pops it right back open for me. It doesn't fix the problem, but when that frozen window contains several hours of unsaved work, wmctrl can be a life-saver.
