Workaround suggestion for comment #11: The only workaround that has worked for me is to use Gnome Classic (no effects) desktop environment, making sure that no compiz processes are started. I am running a similar environment (12.04.5 LTS, 3.13.0-79-generic, nvidia 340.96).
