Just sharing my thoughts for those battling with compiz cpu and/or memory usage on Ubuntu 14.04: Not only compiz in Ubuntu 14.04/Trusty consumes CPU it was also taking significant memory of the order of 150M on my low-end hw laptops. For me Ubuntu 14.04.1+ gnome flashback session with metacity works fine on my low-end hw(2GB RAM+integrated Intel graphics chipset). Also For those on low-end hw laptops pls stay put on Ubuntu 14.04.1.(14.04.3 works better for latest hw) Hope it helps for those with low-end hw wondering on compiz.
