All, good news is that this specific issue appears to have been resolved in the compiz trunk (and also in Oneiric). It appears that two commits [1][2] are required to resolve the issue. I have prepared a patch (attached) which includes both of these commits. Additionally, I have prepared test packages in a PPA [3]. Please try these out (at your own risk of course) to see if this resolves the issue for you.
