we need to set the surefire memory usage explicitly; it doesn't pick up the maven JVM values itself. I've created a JIRA for this. https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HADOOP-11363 I'm not going to do this myself as I've had enough of Hadoop POMs and jenkins build configs for the rest of 2014.
