Resolved in dev by #12042, merged as b274eb1f2877f62a534933253c6243248521b7e2 on October 28, 2026. The merged change addresses the reported failure: it accepts finished unbounded reader groups when restoring an already-running pipeline, while still requiring running coordinators, and rebuilds the closed-reader bookkeeping so subsequent checkpoints do not wait for acknowledgements from tasks that have exited. It also adds the regression test CheckpointCoordinatorFailoverIT.testCheckpointCompletesAfterMasterFailoverWithIdleClosedReader. Closing this issue as completed. The alternative implementation in #12388 is being closed as superseded.
